Anyone who has ever belonged to a health club knows that when the new year begins, working out becomes quite a travail. For a few months you'll have trouble getting that stairmaster or treadmill to which you've grown accustomed.
That's because the new year's resolution folks have all signed up (or dug out their membership cards from beneath that pile of Big Mac wrappers) and decided to work toward fitting into next summer's bathing suit.
With that in mind, we've decided to give you a little guide to area health clubs, with some info on aerobic studios added, for good measure.

WAC took over the former YMCA space at 411 E. Wisconsin Ave. and a number of downtown Y veterans joined the new club in the old location, many citing problems of overcrowding and small lockers at the new downtown Y. But WAC is not simply a haven for refugees of other clubs. Their six area locations are loaded with weight equipment (both free weights and weight machines), aerobics and other classes, sauna, steam rooms and whirlpools, tanning, massage, health education, weight loss programs, a kids club and more. The West Allis location is open 24 hours a day.

The YMCA has a number of locations throughout the city, some with a special focus, like the Schroeder Aquatic Center on the northwest side. But all Ys are well-staffed and well-equipped. There are loads of aerobics and other classes, personal training and the like. But, best of all, you know that when you pay your membership fees, your money is doing more than making someone fat (financially). The YMCA supports many community programs in the city through a wide variety of programs including child care, before and after school care, swim lessons, summer camps and more.
There are, of course, a number of other gyms, aerobic studios and other places to get fit. Here are a few of them. If you don't see your favorite listed, post it using the Talkback feature at the bottom of this story.
If you have a child, look very closely at the childcare at the clubs. after I had a baby I went back to the gym (my second time away from my little guy) and the women at the WAC dropped him on his head and fractured his skull. I WOULD NEVER leave my child there again. Beware!!!!!
Cardinal Fitness - 2 locations in Milwaukee area that's I'm aware of (at least) for $20 a month and a low joining fee and minimal equipment fees every year........ Clearly OMC is not the only people that need to check their facts and listings......
WOW! This is the ultimate example of how lazy OnMilwaukee is. Running an article from '07 and claiming it was updated on Jan. 16, 2010. If you had truly updated it, you would have realized that Cardinal Fitness pulled out of Wisconsin over a year ago! And to ignore other gyms that have opened including LA Fitness, Princeton Club and the North Shore location of the WAC is just incredibly stupid. And to mention Midtown Spa in the same article as legitimate health clubs just proves you have no idea what your writing about. You're not doing any one a favor by running this article. Take it down and actually put some effort behind it.
Just to be clear, Fitness Together isn't a health club. It is by appointment only and you work with a trainer every time you go. It is really nice for people who are intimidated to work out in a crowded gym and for those who really need a guiding hand to keep them on task. I got a free pass and tried it out in the Third Ward location. I liked it, but would rather spend on numerous other indulgences.
If you are a Marquette alum, you can work out at either the RecPlex or RecCenter for $5/visit (includes locker, towel, and parking) or join for between $15-20/month, depending upon the term.
