Disney is working on a movie about Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo's rise from a baby-faced unknown without a country to the NBA's most valuable player, the savior for a small-market sports franchise and the inspiration for a new generation of basketball players is nothing short of magic. And now it's going to be Disney Magic©.
According to a report from Deadline, the Bucks star's life will be the subject of a sports biopic in development for Disney+, the entertainment monolith's new streaming service. Currently under the working title "Greek Freak," the fictionalized biopic would follow Antetokounmpo's rise out of stateless poverty and into the global spotlight after getting drafted by Milwaukee in 2013 and evolving into one of the best basketball players in the world.
The screenplay, according to Deadline, comes from Arash Amel, the writer behind the war correspondent Marie Colvin biopic "A Private War" and the Nicole Kidman-led Grace Kelly biopic "Grace of Monaco."
As of now, there is no release date set for the Disney+ streaming project, nor even an attached director or cast, but stay tuned to OnMilwaukee for more updates on "Greek Freak." And keep rooting for Giannis' story to write itself a perfect Hollywood ending: winning the NBA Finals and hoisting the championship trophy for Milwaukee at the end of this season.
