Bay View HS students visit Purple Door to see winning ice cream go on sale
Students from Bay View High School's culinary arts program have created a unique ice cream flavor and will be on hand at Purple Door Ice Cream on Wednesday, July 17 as it is added to the flavor lineup at the Walker's Point ice creamery.
"Bango Helado con Chamoy" is a mango and beet ice cream with a Mexican dipping sauce and it won the annual ice cream competition among the district's four high school culinary arts programs, which are at Bay View, Washington, Vincent and Madison.
Four teams, with more than 20 students from the programs, faced off in the competition, which is in its third year and was again hosted in collaboration with Bartolotta Restaurants.
On Wednesday, the winners will bask in the cool glow as their ice cream is offered for sale at Purple Door, 205 S. 2nd St.
MPS culinary arts program – based on the ProStart curriculum started by the National Restaurant Association – launched in 2016 with 325 students and now there are 480 enrolled. The program aims to build career-readiness skills that students can carry with them to the hospitality industry when they complete high school or college.
