Urban Spelunking: Revamped West Bend Theatre

The West Bend Theatre opened in the wake of a stock market crash in 1929 and survived. The now-renovated and restored venue celebrated its grand reopening a few weeks ago and was shuttered by the coronavirus social distancing that very same night.

One of the Milwaukee area's most interesting parks is a bit off the beaten path, but it's worth making tracks to Lizard Mound County Park in Farmington, just north of West Bend in Washington County. A wooded path twists and turns through 28 Native American effigy mounds, including the one shaped like a huge lizard which gives the park its name.

Difficult as it is to imagine now that I've seen the place, I was almost a bit worried I might have trouble spotting the new Museum of Wisconsin Art on my first visit recently. Turns out there's no way I could miss Hammel Green & Abrahamson architect Jim Shields' luminescent West Bend building, the pointed prow of which seems to make a statement by aiming itself not southeast toward Milwaukee, but northwest, toward the broader expanse of the state.
