Luckily, someone had the foresight to save the beautiful transom window from above the entrance to Washington High School. Taken out of storage, the window was recently restored and put back into an entrance facing Sherman Boulevard, thanks to the efforts of a number of people.
Marie Herndl has many impressive works bearing her name and a couple than can still be viewed. But "The Fairy Queen," this beautiful 6-by-9 foot piece of mystery and controversy, spends most of its existence in a basement, forgotten and unclaimed.
A while back I had the pleasure of exploring the 1876 cream city brick house at 1363 N. Prospect Ave. Designed by architect James Douglas, for grain broker Gilbert Collins, the house has since been converted to office space, but it retains many of of fabulous details. The other day, Cobalt Glassworks' Jon Schroder sent me some photos of newly restored vintage windows from Collins House.
