The Big Backyard brings kid fun indoors

In a climate like ours - freezing half the year and insanely hot in the depths of summer - parents get to know the indoor play options pretty well. There are tumbling places and big, open rooms full of inflatables. Then, there's The Big Backyard, 2857 S. 160th St., in New Berlin, which celebrated its fifth anniversary last month. In the L-shaped space, there's a wide variety of things for kids of all ages to do.


In search of the perfect pizza: Vitucci's in New Berlin

When I lived in New Berlin, I noticed a sign pointing toward the back of a strip mall with the word "pizza" on it. I then noticed a very familiar sign in the window - "Vitucci's" - in the same font and color as the East North Avenue bar bearing the same name. I had to ask the obvious question, and yes, they are related.


Brewers wives to host mixer for fans to benefit cancer charity

On Sunday, July 29 from 5 to 8 p.m., Brewers Wives will host the second annual Grand Slam Golden Mixer Event presented by the Brewers Community Foundation at StoneFire Pizza Co. in New Berlin in support of the Foundation for Children with Cancer.


Moving a restaurant from Fond du Lac to New Berlin

It's not all that unusual for a restaurant to pick up and move. North Star American Bistro migrated to a new space across Oakland Avenue in Shorewood a year and a half ago. Two venerable Milwaukee eateries, the Boulevard Inn and Chip & Py's, made cross-town moves before eventually closing. But a 70-mile relocation is definitely out of the ordinary. That is what Chris and Jennifer Giaimo have done with their Bellafini's Trattoria.


New Berlin neighbors find friends, fun at Lee's

A lot of taverns like to refer to themselves as "neighborhood" establishments. Lee's Cleveland Pub and Grill really means it. Miramar's Stace expands to South Side's Modjeska

Bill Stace will expand his entertainment empire to the South Side. Stace will host shows at the Modjeska Theatre on Mitchell Street after he gets a liquor license from the Common Council. The Licenses Committee gave its approval last week.

City workers are more careful and healthier. Or it could be that a recent report noting fewer workers compensation claims due to injuries and illnesses in 2006 compared to 2005 could be attributed to the fact that there are fewer workers to make those claims.
