Urban spelunking: Former Zinn / Kurth Malting silos, site of future Harbor Yards

Announced in September, the Mandel Group's $150 million Harbor Yards mixed-use development with a hotel, apartments, office space, public green space and more will remake the south bank of the Milwaukee River as it heads out to the lake. I went to see the former malting silos there before they come down.

In 2012, I toured the surviving Alexander Eschweiler-designed Agricultural College buildings on the County Grounds, when their roofs gaped open to the stars - and the elements - and weeds encircled their exteriors. Despite talk of tearing them down, and an ongoing battle to save them from demolition, four of the buildings survive, even as six new apartment buildings are rising around them.

Downtown Milwaukee continues to grow -- and new streets, bikes lanes, the Bublr like, trolleys, taxis, Uber, Lyft and other components have made it easier to get around -- but is still without the sort of modern transportation system that connects neighborhoods in other vibrant cities. UPDATED: 8th District Ald. Robert Donovan opposes the plan in a letter to Rep. Dale Kooyenga.

Colectivo and Lowlands announce first Waukesha County locations

A new Colectivo cafe and a new grand cafe concept from the owners of Cafe Benelux restaurant - the first by each of the locally owned dining groups in Waukesha County - will open in The Marcus Corporation's open-air mall called The Corners of Brookfield, located east of Barker Road near the intersection of I-94 and Bluemound Road.

Urban spelunking: Eschweiler buildings on the County Grounds

From the view I usually have of them, the four remaining Agricultural College buildings designed by Alexander Eschweiler and erected in 1911-12, are a mystery. They're perched above Swan Boulevard in a position that suggests respect. But they're also obscured from the road because they're peeking out from trees and overgrown tangles of weeds, lurking like escaped prisoners hiding from their fate.
