Sometimes, a little waiting - and maybe a little timing - is all it takes. Just ask Lincoln and Lilith Fowler, who still have photographs they took of each other outside the former firehouse at 1945 N. Bartlett Ave. 20 years ago on their fridge. The Fowlers bought the 1886 building earlier this year.

Driving around Milwaukee on Sunday morning, there were a lot of tree branches, large and small, to be seen, victims of heavy winds the day before, when our first snowflakes appeared, too. The worst victim I've heard about so far was along the path in Lake Park that runs along Lake Drive on the upper East Side.

Before 1997, you wouldn't likely have noticed the low-slung building at 2211 N. Prospect Ave. Now, it's hard to imagine it as anything other than the first Colectivo cafe, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Among the more delicious examples of adaptive reuse in Milwaukee is the Colectivo Lakefront Cafe, where not only is the coffee hot and the food simple and delicious, but the setting can't be beat. While I love the lakefront site, I love the building even more.
