LBWN matching grants help South Side residents beautify their homes

Layton Boulevard West Neighbors began its home improvement matching grants program in 2012 with grants up to $500. The program now offers $1,000 and $3,000 grants intended to improve the homes' "curb appeal," Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service reports.

Community groups look for answers as federal program funds decline

Layton Boulevard West Neighbors bought an eyesore of a house on 36th Street in the Silver City neighborhood last winter and is making major repairs and upgrades, as part of a program that renovates vacant properties previously owned by the city or a bank and sells them to families. However, according to a report from Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, the government funding that helps support this and similar programs throughout the city has been in significant decline.

Students create street mural for their neighborhood and learn civic engagement

Artists Working in Education, Inc. (A.W.E.) has partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools' Anna F. Doerfler Community School and Layton Boulevard West Neighbors (LBWN) to engage students in creating Milwaukee's first street mural. The celebration and unveiling of the mural will take place on Friday, June 5, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Anna F. Doerfler Community School.

LBWN's Mobile Bike Hub keeps community rolling

All the signs are there: Baseball is back in business, the flowers and plants are beginning to bloom again, and bikes are emerging from their winter hibernation. And in the Layton Boulevard West Neighbors (LBWN), the return of the bikes also signals the return of the Mobile Bike Hub.

Our Daily Salt, 3519 W. National Ave., specializes in handcrafted items for the home and kitchen. Products include endgrain cutting boards, hand-turned wooden bowls, rolling pins, salt cellars, spice mills, bottle stoppers and a variety of utensils including hand-carved tongs, spoons, scoops and rack pullers.
