When we first talked to Seattle-based indie folk rockers The Head and the Heart, the band was still basking in the success of its well-received self-titled debut album and an upcoming Milwaukee appearance, not as the opener, but as the headliner. It's been a busy three years since that interview for the band, with a sophomore album now out and a tour that brings The Head and the Heart to Milwaukee now twice in a four-month stretch.

When we first chatted with Josiah Johnson, singer and guitarist for The Head and the Heart, the band was about to embark on its first headlining tour. By then the band had already built a fan base in Milwaukee with a gig at Turner Hall. Now, The Head and the Heart returns to perform its melodic, often piano-based pop at Summerfest. You can see the group Sunday, July 1 at 10 p.m. at the Briggs and Stratton Big Backyard.

It's rare to stumble upon a debut that feels accomplished. But the self-titled debut from Seattle band The Head and The Heart is one of those records. Self-released last year, a bolstered version of "The Head and The Heart" was issued by Sub Pop Records earlier this year. The band returns to Milwaukee this week and we spoke to The Head and the Heart's Josiah Johnson.
