Arriving at the Hotel Goodwin in Beloit, the kindly woman at the front desk welcomed me and said the city has changed ... "a lot." Even spending just a weekend in this border town an hour southwest of Milwaukee was enough to make that quite clear.

A visit to the Aztalan Museum in Lake Mills allows you to step back in time to the early European settlement of the area. For a great family day-trip complement it with a visit to the Aztalan State Park - a National Landmark - which sends you even further back to a time when a vibrant native city thrived here on the banks of the Crawfish River.

Latest phase takes us on a tour of Wisconsin burial mounds

My child's latest phase focuses on Native American culture and always eager to indulge these interests, we went looking for Indian mounds recently in Milwaukee and learned that though there were once many, just two remain in the county. Of course, we hopped into the car and visited them both.
