Living with the unimaginable

Published Feb. 19, 2018

What can we do? America is not Australia, nor Israel. Stricter gun control is an obvious answer but our cultural love affair with guns defies reason. Rationales offered supporting the proliferation of assault rifles prove to be specious distractions.

Revolting votes by Johnson, GOP senators mean more gun murders

Published June 23, 2016

It may not be possible to be any more revolted by the Republican Party than I am right now. This week Senate Republicans, including our Sen. Ron Johnson, turned down a couple of serious attempts to enact minor laws designed to help control gun violence.

The only way to stop gun insanity is simple - but oh so difficult

Published June 14, 2016

This may come across as a little heartless and dismissive but it's time to put a stop to the kind of hopeless junk that rose up after the horror of the massacre in Orlando. The only way to win the battle for gun control is with sophisticated politics.

How safe is UWM? The reasons we don't need guns on campus

Published Oct. 20, 2015

If we're going to have the "guns on campus debate" - and due to warring pieces of legislation, we must - let's at least argue the issue using accurate information. And according to that information, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, if it were a city, would be one of the safest around.

Why don't we treat guns the same way we treat cars?

Published July 28, 2015

America doesn't have a gun problem, the argument goes; it has a car problem! This is perhaps my favorite of all the pro-gun defenses - favorite being in this case a relative term. But I need to be clear about this: I would give just about anything if guns could be licensed, regulated and policed the way automobiles are in this country.

New firearms possession bill proves positives of bipartisanship

Published June 10, 2015

State Representatives LaTonya Johnson and Joel Kleefisch found a rare common sense place when they proposed creating the mandatory minimum sentences for felons who possess firearms. That's right: A Milwaukee Democrat and an Oconomowoc Republican came together on a gun issue and managed to gain the support of a majority of others in the Assembly from both parties despite earlier dissent. That's pretty remarkable.

Finding common ground for Laylah

Published Nov. 10, 2014

I looked at family photos of the 5-year-old girl who was shot to death this week in Milwaukee. They were even more heartbreaking than the single angelic professional photo the media's been highlighting. You see Laylah Petersen doing things all little girls do. Trick or treating. Going to the zoo. In church. Swinging. Taking goofy selfies for the camera. I have a 9-year-old girl. She does all of those things. Laylah Petersen must be regarded now, in a sense, as this community's child, too.

Let history guide our political compass

Published May 16, 2013

I often wonder if public officials give any consideration to the historical lens that will define their current level of enlightenment decades from now. History will show there is a "right" side and a "wrong" side to many of the issues we debate today, including health care reform, gay marriage and gun control.

If you have a different stance on these two issues, then you are allowing your personal politics to override your principles. This is the key mistake many people make. When you follow what the Constitution says, and not what you want it to mean, you'll find that these issues often have a simple solution.
