Tradition runs deep in Cudahy and the Pulaski Hall that was built there, at 3900 E. Pulaski Ave., in 1905 not only still stands, it's still operating. And it still bears the name of the "Father of the American cavalry," Kazimierz Pulaski.

The Metal Grill, a venue which has served up both raucous head-banging music, bacon-centric apps and burgers, closed abruptly on Friday. The venue's closing was announced on Facebook and has since been listed for sale.

Last week, we spontaneously stopped in The Metal Grill in Cudahy and were pleased the experience epitomized both the words "metal" and "grill," thanks to incredibly tasty burgers and raucous head-banging on the stage.

Cudahy artist and surfer inspired by California culture

Dave Hansen was born in California but his family moved away when he was very young and before he could remember living there. Today, Hansen lives in Cudahy with his wife and 2-year-old son and works as a full-time, freelance artist who creates tiki carvings and other "Polynesian pop" pieces. He also surfs on Lake Michigan.

Yesterday, I walked around Packard Avenue in Cudahy for the first time in a long time. I mean, I drive through or around Cudahy all the time, but yesterday was different. I stopped to smell the roses. Every real Milwaukeeans should pay a visit to downtown Cudahy every now and then. It's like a window into our past, and it's still alive and kicking today.

Dennis Erb has always been fascinated by fierce weather conditions, so when he opened his Cudahy-based brew pub he named it Tornado Brewing Co., 3506 E. Layton Ave.
