Whimsical gingerbread village showcases talents of local pastry chef

Since North Shore Boulangerie opened in 2014, it's been tradition to display a beautiful holiday scene made from gingerbread in the bakery's front window. This year's display was created by a recent MATC graduate who's made a splash with her creative designs.

MATC Promise program gives thousands an education lifeline

Launched in 2017, MATC Promise, which provides a free education for low and middle-income students, was originally open only to new high school graduates in the Milwaukee area. Last year, it expanded to include adults who started but didn't finish college, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service reports.

Young adults in YouthBuild help construct Habitat for Humanity houses

A year ago, Michael Merkel was a homeless high school dropout, sleeping on cold park benches on the North Side after one too many arguments with his mother. After two months of avoiding the police, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service reports the 18-year-old found himself in front of a counselor who directed him to MATC's YouthBuild, a program that gives low-income, at-risk youth and young adults experience in the construction trades.
