Resilient Bella Caffe simmers with success

When Tim Talsky opened Bella Caffe, 189 N. Milwaukee St., in 2001 it was the first and only coffee house in the neighborhood. The focus for the first few years was to serve good coffee and homemade desserts to theater-goers after performances. Over time, Bella's concept changed to the breakfast-and-lunch destination it is today. Talsky also co-owns The Soup Market restaurants.

With another Alterra cafe not all that far away, at 92nd and North in Wauwatosa, you might wonder if the hometown caffeine kings are pushing it by opening one on 68th and Wells. But when I stopped in this weekend, there was a long line and lots of folks enjoying the patio.

Changes in store for Lulu's cafe

Lulu, 2265 S. Howell Ave., is remodeling the cafe side of the space. Co-owner Sarah Jonas says the cafe - which opened in 2001 - closed yesterday but will reopen in about four weeks.
