Milwaukee was never a hotbed of lesbian bars, but from the '70s until recently there were always at least a few in operation at the same time. Now there seems to be one, possibly two, women's bars left in the city. The disappearance of lesbian bars is happening in other parts of the country, too. Why is this?

Announced in September, the Mandel Group's $150 million Harbor Yards mixed-use development with a hotel, apartments, office space, public green space and more will remake the south bank of the Milwaukee River as it heads out to the lake. I went to see the former malting silos there before they come down.
