Milwaukee premieres featured in two Broadway seasons

Milwaukee theatergoers who favor touring Broadway shows are usually in a state of feast or famine. Some seasons introduce us to new fare that hasn't been seen here before, and other years offer only retreads and revivals.

I'm happy to report there will be a lot of feasting during the 2011-12 stage season.

Two local venues, the Marcus Center and the Milwaukee Theatre, book national touring companies. The Marcus' season, officially known as Time Warner Cable Broadway at the Marcus Center, will feature our first glimpses of "Billy Elliot," "Mary Poppins" and "Million Dollar Quartet." The local premiere of "In the Heights" is in the Milwaukee Theatre season.

Here are the lineups:

Marcus Center – "Million Dollar Quartet," Nov. 15-20; "Blue Man Group," Jan. 3-8, 2012; "Mary Poppins," Feb. 28-March 4, 2012; "West Side Story," April 10-15, 2012; "Billy Elliot the Musical," July 18-29, 2012.

Milwaukee Theatre – "South Pacific," Oct. 28-29; Disney Live Presents Three Classic Fairy Tales, Nov. 20; "Rain – A Tribute to the Beatles," March 1, 2012; Tribute to the Blues Brothers, March 8, 2012; "Shrek the Musical," April 5-8, 2012; "In the Heights," May 4-5, 2012.

This comment is NOT accurate!

The production of In The Heights coming to Milwaukee is a NON-EQUITY production, so buyer beware!!!

I too, have seen a few of these cheap, community-theater-style versions, passed off locally as 'Official U.S. National Tour" productions. I'm wondering how exactly, they get away with this??

dschley, we appreciate your interest in the Milwaukee Theatre.

Milwaukee is one of only a few U.S. cities to have two venues hosting world-class Broadway productions. The musicals presented by the Milwaukee Theatre, such as Rodgers & Hammersteins South Pacific, are the official U.S. touring productions of shows currently or recently appearing on Broadway. We book our shows from the same agents and work with same production companies as Broadway Across America, the Broadway presenter for the Marcus Center.

The Milwaukee Theatre also hosts a wide range of concerts and family shows, including top-shelf performers such as Janet Jackson on August 14 and Shrek the Musical April 5 8, 2012. You can find more information about these and more upcoming shows at MilwaukeeTheatre.org, where you can also sign up for our email newsletters, and at Facebook.com/mketheatre.

Hopefully weve answered your questions.

I would love to know more about the Milwaukee Theatre shows. I know that the the Marcus shows are through Broadway Across America. The Milwaukee Theatre aften brings bus and truck shows of far less quality. At time they have had recorded music. It is very hard to get details. It is interesting that on the tour website for South Pacific, Milwaukee is not in the schedule at this time.
