For the eighth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Locavore, the newest restaurant at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2014."
Back in August, we reported that "Wings Over" was adding a Milwaukee location at 1434 E. Brady St. David Gordon and partner Ben Fuller are bringing the franchise to the area -- they also own Wings Over Madison.
The new option for finger-lickin' wings, ribs and more opened yesterday on Brady Street. Diners can enjoy more than 23 flavors of wings -- both bone-in or boneless -- including sauces, dry rub and Buffalo style.
Wings Over Milwaukee claims they serve only the "largest, meatiest, tastiest wings available" -- which is a pretty big claim. My favorite wings in town include Points East Pub and Magoo's -- so how do these compare?
The parmesan-garlic and sweet chili bone-in wings.
I'm a sucker for dry rub wings -- and prefer my wings bone-in -- so it was pretty easy for me to decide what to try first. I ordered the parmesan garlic dry rub -- which was noted as a favorite on the menu board -- and the sweet chili. I liked the rub as well as the sauce -- and the meaty wings were a good size. The outsides were crisp and the inside was tender and cooked through. I'm looking forward to trying a few other of the dry rubs -- especially the Texas mesquite.
The chicken tender size boneless wings with honey bbq.
The boneless chicken wings are huge -- apparently Wings Over Milwaukee wants to give you strips and exceed your expectations on these. I really enjoyed the honey barbecue sauce -- tangy while not overly sweet. While I typically don't order boneless if I was in the mood for some chicken strips -- aka these boneless wings -- I would order these again.
Wings Over Milwaukee has your standard sides of french fries, onion rings and waffle fries. I opted for the latter and tried the waffle fries which has a mustang ranch dry rub on them. They were hot, crispy and the rub was a nice touch for flavoring.
The location makes it a perfect after bar stop and I anticipate they will get a slew of folks in line at bar time -- including me. The fact that they also offer delivery north to the UWM area, west to Marquette and south of Downtown is great. There are a few tables in the compact space but the focus is primarily take-out and delivery.
Wings are a tough business in Milwaukee. There are some very very good ones -- two of which we will try later this week -- and delivery is a big plus for those wanting their wing fix at home.
I'll be stopping in again soon to try the St. Louis-style pork ribs and chicken.
