Why you can't miss it
We've been waiting for years and the day is finally here. On Tuesday, Sept. 4, Fiserv Forum will open the doors to its first event and show Milwaukeeans what the hype is all about. This is without exaggeration a once-in-a-lifetime event – and that doesn't even take into account the two acts that will take the stage.
First off are legends of post-punk rock, the Violent Femmes. They grace the short list of greatest things to come out Milwaukee, competing against other stars like Schlitz, the QWERTY keyboard and The Fonz. It is hard to imagine a better band to usher in the next era of entertainment in our city while paying tribute to its past.
Then you have The Killers. As someone who was just starting high school when their explosive debut record, "Hot Fuss," was released, I will always have a personal connection with this band. Today, they are among the last of a dying breed of arena rock bands, and on Tuesday they will become the first headliner of all time in the world's most state-of-the-art-arena.
Song starter pack
The Hit: "Mr. Brightside"
I know this song. You know this song. Even your parents probably know this song. If you were to argue that this is the most defining rock hit of the 2000s, I don't think that I could make the case against you.
B-Side Beauty: "Sam's Town"
It's definitely unfair to call the title track off an album that has sold over 4.5 million copies a "b-side," but this song has never gotten its due as an anthemic (when it wants to be) classic.
Can't Wait to See it Live: "Smile Like You Mean It"
Maybe I'm biased because this was my freshman year favorite, but there's no question that this is The Killers at their best.
