Summerfest announces Lionel Richie as headliner on July 2
Hello. Is it a new Summerfest headliner announcement you're looking for? Well, here you go: Smooth soul pop king Lionel Richie will take the American Family Insurance Amphitheater on Tuesday, July 2, with special guest Michael McDonald.
The gig represents Richie's first time headlining as a solo artist at the Big Gig, as well as his first visit to the festival since 1982, when Richie performed the main stage with the Commodores.
It was with the Commodores that Richie got his start in the late '60s and '70s, creating hits like "Brick House," "Machine Gun," "Easy" and "Three Times A Lady." However, Richie eventually went solo during the '80s beginning with his 1982 self-titled album, which featured hits like "Truly," "You Are" and "My Love."
Over his career, he's earned several Grammy nominations as well as four wins – including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Truly" in 1983, Album of the Year in 1985 for "Can't Slow Down" (he was also nominated for Song of the Year that year for "Hello," but lost to Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With it") and a share of Song of the Year along with Michael Jackson in 1986 for "We Are the World."
Richie also won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1986 for his track "Say You, Say Me" in "White Nights" (beating "The Power of Love" from "Back to the Future – just saying). He currently serves as a judge on the latest seasons of ABC's "American Idol" alongside Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
Tickets for this show will go on sale starting on Friday, March 22 at noon at Ticketmaster and Summerfest's website. All online ticket orders come with a copy of Richie's new album, "Live in Las Vegas." Tickets can also be bought in person at the Summerfest box office, Ticketmaster ticket centers and select Walmart stores, as well as by phone at (800) 745-3000 for a live Ticketmaster Agent or (866) 448-7849 for the "Ticketmaster Express" automated phone line.
