Biju's Block Party helps friends in need through power of music

Biju Zimmerman's love for music, friends and throwing kick-ass parties comes to a confluence once again this weekend with the fourth-annual Biju's Block Party.

The fun takes place on Sunday, July 22 from 2 p.m. to midnight and features 17 bands and solo musicians who will donate their time and talents at neighboring bars Sabbatic, 700 S. 2nd St., and The Tin Widow, 703 S. 2nd St.

Biju's Block Party is a free event, but guests are encouraged to buy raffle tickets or make a donation. Many Milwaukee businesses donated items or gift certificates for the raffle and all proceeds will be given to Josh Englund and Jason Voss, both of whom are recovering from accidents that required expensive medical treatment.

Zimmerman, the former drummer of the band Camden, among others, is a tour manager for a variety of musicians, including Chicago-bred singer / songwriter Aleem and Eric Benet, an R&B / neo-soul superstar from Milwaukee. He is also instrumental at Burnhearts' annual Mitten Fest and Pabst Street Party, and books bands at a variety of Walker's Point and South Side venues.

Zimmerman has lived on 2nd Street – which he nicknamed "The Block" – for 12 years. His dedication to local music and compassion for his friends make for an incredibly fun and successful fundraising event.

"It's another day where the power of music helps out friends," says Zimmerman. "Everybody wins. This year, I was surprised by how many bands asked me if they could play. Usually it's me asking them. I actually wish we had more time."
