Lights, camera, action: The Milwaukee Film Festival announces its 2019 dates

Last year, in an already crazy year for the nonprofit arts organization (just opened a theater, no big), Milwaukee Film also moved its signature fall festival to a new place on the calendar from late September/early October to the end of October. The result was yet again a bunch of great movies ("Science Fair," "Pick of the Litter," just to name a few) and a great time.

And Milwaukee Film must've agreed because today the organization officially planted its flag in the same spot, announcing the dates for the 2019 festival: Thursday, Oct. 17 through Thursday, Oct. 31.

"Last year's move to later fall dates proved successful, and we are excited to remain at the end of October," noted Jonathan Jackson, CEO and artistic director of Milwaukee Film, in a press release.

"Bringing the best of independent cinema to Milwaukee audiences has been a goal since day one, and the shift in dates allowed us the opportunity to secure major titles that are now in awards season conversations. We look forward to discovering the best new films and presenting them to our audiences at our festival's 11th edition."

Some of those awards season picks Milwaukee got to see early thanks to the festival include potential documentary nominees like "Free Solo," "Minding the Gap," "Hale County This Morning, This Evening," "Charm City" and "On Her Shoulders," along with foreign film contenders like "Burning," "Shoplifters," "The Guilty" and "Cold War." And that's just a sample of the more than 300 movies the Milwaukee Film Festival screened in October last year.

If you would like to join that number this year, conveniently enough, the Milwaukee Film Festival also announced its call for entries today. Looking for works of all lengths and genres, the call's deadline is July 1. For the entry form and additional information, visit Milwaukee Film's website.

And to watch some great, guaranteed-to-be-Oscar-nominated films while you're counting down to the 2019 Milwaukee Film Festival, "If Beale Street Could Talk" and "The Favourite" are currently showing at the Oriental Theatre.
