OnMedia: It sounds like curtains for NBC's "Community"
NBC's announcement this week that "Community" was being replaced in the 7 p.m. Thursday hour early in January certainly isn't good news for one of network TV's most innovative comedies.
Nothing's been said by NBC about "Community," which some fans see as a glimmer of hope.
I've been a fan of the show, as well as a booster of its creator, ComedySportz veteran Dan Harmon. It's not necessarily Milwaukee-flavored comedy, but Harmon is a unique talent.
In fact, it's a sitcom that's hard to fathom if you're not into its rhythm. Here's a sample from last week's episode.
I can't criticize NBC for programming arguably its best comedy, "30 Rock," at the opening of its crucial Thursday comedy lineup. And I have to admit I was surprised when "Community" didn't make the list.
But I will be sad if this smaller, less conventional comedy doesn't land somewhere.
So sorry to hear of your passing Tim. I enjoyed reading your articles everyday and exchanging emails with you, even though I may not have agreed with you all the time. RIP
I was a big fan of Community and continue to watch it this year, but I am not too surprised they are cancelling the show. I believe they "jumped the shark" last holiday season with the clamation stuff. It just seemed like there were and continue to be a lot of filler episodes. The first season was so funny and it is rapidly dwindling. They do use the "a lot about nothing" approach to the show, but the problem is that it is mostly a lot about nothing funny as the show progresses. Simply being weird and not mainstream does not make it a good show. Nevertheless, I still watch every week hoping for a gem.
I'm gonna have to agree with Sandstorm that S1 was great and S2 kinda went off the deep end in a lot of ways. However, S3 is shaping up rather nicely. I knew the show was in trouble after S2 because I never heard anybody talk about it and I hoped S3 could pull it out of the water. And it can, if it's given a chance. Honestly, though, I'm expecting it to be the next Arrested Development.
Personally I like Community and Big Bang Theory, and I'm surprised, with how clever they are, that they've both managed to hang on this long. That said. It seems like networks this season are keeping some of their comedies to 1/2 season runs, but not cancelling them. For instance, Cougartown and 30 Rock, both of which I also enjoy, don't start until mid-season. Hopefully that is what will happen to Community, except they just get to be on the 1st half of the season and come back next year.
yeah, i gave my opinion regarding Community on another article but here it is again- Great show in its first season. probably one of the best that season. then came season 2 and it all fell apart. boring, predictable and even smug. unwatchable really. kinda like Seinfeld's last 3 seasons. to each his own though, as some people think Whitney teaches them about the "human condition". Workaholics is the funniest show one week and the just a waste of 22 minutes the next week. way too inconsistent. Always Sunny is still top of the comedy heap. Parks and Rec a comfortable second. Archer is pretty damn good most weeks as well. Happy Endings is actually decent, as is Suburgatory. "i love you Rum Ham!"
