First look: Tippecanoe Herbs & Apothecary
Recently, Serena Marinelli and Kyle Denton opened Tippecanoe Herbs & Apothecary at 2235 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. in Bay View. The couple ran a similar shop until this summer in Walker's Point.
The warm, natural space is stocked with multitudes of herbal products, including teas, salves, tinctures, body products, candles, books, sage sticks, cards, gift items and more.
"Anything that's helpful for a healthy mind, body and spirit," says Marinelli.
Natural immune boosters like elderberry syrup and flame cider vinegar are particularly popular this time of year to prevent seasonal illness.
The shop offers classes on herb usage and will expand their educational offerings and host herb walks after the holidays. They will also eventually open a small cafe in the space as well as an on-site production facility.
Marinelli grew up in Italy and was raised with herbalist medicine, and her mother and her grandmother cultivated herbs in their yards. "There's a whole different mindset about herbs in Italy," she says.
Both Marinelli and Denton studied Ayurvedic medicine and although they are not medical doctors they are able to help their customers support their health. Denton specializes in "western herbalism" that combines the principals of Ayurvedic medicine – which is rooted in Indian culture – with the herbs and natural offerings that grow in this region.
"It makes sense that we can best keep ourselves healthy with herbs from our same environment," says Marinelli.
Tippecanoe Herbs & Apothecary is open Wednesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. They may extend hours for holiday shoppers.
