10 vintage photos of Milwaukee gas stations
The coronavirus pandemic has changed our everyday life, but it doesn't need to change who we are. So, in addition to our ongoing coverage of the coronavirus, OnMilwaukee will continue to report on cool, fun, inspiring and strange stories from our city and beyond. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay informed and stay joyful. We're all in this together. #InThisTogetherMKE
These days in Wisconsin, filling up your car is a no-nonsense affair and one in which, increasingly, there is absolutely zero interaction now that we can and do pay at the pump.
But back in the day, you didn't even get out of your car. Instead, a gas station attendant did the dirty work – often in a crisp white uniform – and checked your oil and washed your windows while you waited.
For folks who miss those days gone by – and for ones just curious to see it – here's a freshly squeegeed window into some vintage Milwaukee-area filling stations, where folks also got their cars serviced. Thanks to the folks in the Old Milwaukee Facebook group for sharing!
