Ear piercing is a body adornment that never goes out of style. In some cultures, it's common for infants to have their ears pierced, but other families have a strict age as to when ear piercing is acceptable.
Ava Richards took her daughter to Claire's Boutique to get her ears pierced for her 10th birthday.
"I made sure the piercer was licensed and that they were comfortable working with children," says Richards.
Before you choose a location, decide if you want the procedure done via a piercing gun – which is used at chain boutiques like Claire's – or a surgical needle used at most tattoo / piercing shops. Not all tattoo / piercing shops will pierce kids, so be sure to call ahead. Parents will need to bring an ID.
Also, prepare for some tears regardless of the child's desire to get their ears pierced. Richards says her daughter cried a lot during the procedure, but she was very happy to have her ears pierced after it was done.
"I would say it was a traumatic experience with a happy ending," says Richards.

At A Hair for Kids Salon LLC we are licensed, sanitary, professional, and have 34 years of piercing experience. Our salon located in New Berlin is required by the law to provide the highest standard of sanitation. Our salon uses a sterilized (disposable) gun method to pierce the ears, which will be thrown away after a single use. This is the latest technology so there will be no cross contamination between other users. We as licensed professionals are trained and are required by the state law to wear gloves for the service. Our salon pierces both adult, boys, girls, and babies ears. Our earrings are nickel free, surgical steel, 14 kt gold, and hypoallergenic. We provide a kid friend atmosphere to make kids feel comfortable. We are not some adult tattoo-piercing salons that look dark and gothic. Our Piercing Service requires a guardian to fill & sign a consent form if under the age of 18 years. We start piercing @ 4 months old and up. Children should have their regular shots first before thinking of getting their ears pierced. An ear care instruction will be given to you to take home to know how to care for your new piercing. Our salon offers this service 6 days a week. We are closed on Mondays. By appointment only, cash or check only. Piercings start at $25 and go up depending on the choice of earring picked out. Please check out our you tube videos if your child is a little nervous about getting their ears pierced. @ Hair4kids My 2 year old daughter had her ears pierced here, Kathleen did a fantastic job of reassuring me that everything including her hands and surrounding areas were sanitized. My daughter is usually very shy with strangers and Kathleen did a great job and made her feel very comfortable. She made sure the placement of the earrings was just right and gave my daughter a sucker to boot! I have taken our daughter here for haircuts as well and had a great experience.I highly recommend Kathleen and A Hair For Kids Salon!
