For decades, West Allis has always been known for its low-key bar scene, top notch pub fare and classic eateries like Kegel's Inn. But, the swifty developing neighborhood also happens to be an under-rated hot spot for finding deliciously different ethnic fare.

Even more recently, the West Side has become one of the city's best spots to sample Chinese bakery, barbecue and locally minded comfort food cuisine.

Alphonso's The Original

Open since 2010, Alphonso's features a fairly wide variety of pizzas, along with a short list of toasted sandwiches, for carryout or delivery. Choose from cracker, New York style, super bee (with honey and red pepper flakes), herbie (double dough herbed) or evil knievel (scorpion pepper crust) topped with both traditional and a few more creative toppings. If you love garlic bread, try the decadent Fuel Injected Cheesy Garlic Bread which features garlic butter spread on top – as well as injected right into – the bread.

This bright, cheerful spot serves up creative contemporary dishes inspired by the cuisines of Latin America, Mexico and Spain at this hidden gem located on the eastern end of West Allis. Whether it's Yucatan braised pork, enchiladas or steak with chimichurri sauce, you're sure to find something delicious.

Big Deal Burgers & Custard
1440 S. 84th St., (414) 774-4000

Go local at Big Deal where the custard is made fresh and the burgers feature top grade ground sirloin and buns from Peter Sciortino's Bakery. Super hungry? Try the Big Deal Burger featuring a one-pound burger topped with six strips of bacon, four slices of cheese and extra butter.

Big Ebe's Pizza

Big Ebe's has been a family owned West Allis fixture since 1978. The old school menu features pizza, baked pasta dishes, broasted chicken and fish fry, all available for dine in, carry out or delivery.

Brass Monkey Pub
11904 W. Greenfield Ave., (414) 476-6099

You're either going to think of the cocktail or the Beastie Boys' tune by the same name, and that's OK. After all, the Brass Monkey is a neighborhood joint where you're likely to run into one or the other when you belly up to the bar. Along with drinks and plenty of tunes on the jukebox, you can also enjoy a menu of pizza, burgers and chicken dinners served up straight from the old school broaster.

Capri di Nuovo

This West Allis classic, formerly known as Capri's, has been around since the 1960's. It reopened in 2014 with a brand new name and new owners; but, you'll still find some of Capri's classic offerings on the menu. If you're looking for ooey gooey cheesy pasta dishes, classic thin crust pizza and carbonara made the traditional way, you'll find it at Capri di Nuovo. Take a seat inside and enjoy the diner-esque environs or take it out to the patio where you can enjoy your Italian feast al fresco. Don't forget the housemade cannoli for dessert.

Chef Paz

Don't miss this unassuming West Allis gem which has been serving up classic Peruvian fare since 2012. Colorful offerings include flavorful empanadas, ceviche, aji de gallina (chicken stew) and lomo (sauteed steak) along with a variety of dishes which showcase the impact of myriad cultural influences on Peru. Along with appetizers and entrees, you can also sample Peruvian beer, sangria and a small selection of Peruvian wines.

When this cajun and creole staple closed in 2013, a collective cry went up from the dining public. Known for its seafood, as well as its N'awlins inspired fare, Crawdaddy's rose like a Phoenix in 2016 when it reopened in a bigger, better location serving up beloved favorites like jambalaya, seafood etouffee and blackened catfish along with classic entrees like Steak Diane. Be prepared for a wait if you're dining on the weekend.

Dicken's Grill & Spirits
9646 W. Greenfield Ave., (414) 258-0888

This corner pub offers up a nice selection of local craft brews along with sandwiches, appetizers, housemade pizza and a popular Friday night fish fry featuring walleye, shrimp, cod and breaded lake perch served up with coleslaw, rye bread and your choice of fries or potato pancakes. Other crowd favorites include grilled burgers and loaded Bloody Marys on Sundays. Note: You do have to walk through the heated smoking deck to get inside the restaurant; but, it does a fair job of keeping any residual smoke contained.

Dopp's Bar & Grill
1753 S. 68th St., (414) 257-1400

If you're looking for a solid bar to watch the game, Dopp's is a good bet. But, it's also a good place to grab a plate of bar food. The menu includes a solid selection of burgers and sandwiches, some served up with fries and mini candy bars. They're also one of the only brick and mortar spots where you can find authentic Polish pierogi made by Stuffed, the popular local food truck.

Double B's BBQ
7420 W. Greenfield Ave.,(414) 257-9150

Stop in at Double B's and sample some of the best barbecue in West Allis, including smoked wings, brisket, ribs and pulled pork served up with your choice of sides including beans, cornbread, macaroni and cheese and coleslaw. The meat is perfect on its own, but you can gild the lily with housemade barbecue sauces. As you'd expect, there's also a full bar, so you can pair your smoked meats with a craft beer or old fashioned.

Escobar's Kitchen
9130 W. Greenfield Ave., (414) 885-0025

This brightly colored corner spot offers up a large, reasonably priced menu featuring both classic American sandwiches like burgers and BLTs as well as Mexican specialties including quesadillas, chimichangas and fajitas. Both dine-in and carry out area available.

The Farmer's Wife
6533 W. Mitchell St., (414) 488-8296

If it's comfort food you're after, look no further than the Farmer's Wife, a newcomer to the West Allis scene in fall of 2016. From housemade soups and grass fed burgers to poutine, chicken and waffle sliders, pot roast, fried chicken and specials including Tuesday night tomahawk steaks, this casual eatery offers up some of the best in housemade fare using local and organic ingredients.

Filippo's Italian Restaurant

This old school red-sauce Italian joint serves up homemade pizza, pastas and entrees including classics like veal parmigiana, chicken cacciatore and shrimp scampi along with soups and salads. Don't forget to order up a side of fried eggplant.

Fratelli's Pizza Cafe
6202 W. Lincoln Ave.,(414) 541-0500

This quaint fast casual spot serves hand-tossed stone oven pizza, salads, burgers, subs, sausages and Italian beef sandwiches. Limited dine-in space is available; however most customers opt for carry out. Pro tip: get your Italian beef dipped with sauteed peppers and giardiniera.

Fusion Cafe
1427 S. 108th St., (414) 257-1199

Part Chinese bakery, part restaurant, Fusion Cafe offers up a delicious selection of Asian curries, rice dishes, stir fried noodles and traditional noodle soups along with bakery items like savory pork buns, egg custards and lotus cake.

Having moved from close proximity to the amazing array of Bay View restaurants out to the burbs, which, sadly, have only cookie cutter chain places, I am just delighted that you've posted this list. We're close to West Allis but I had no idea there were this many restaurants around. I can't wait to dive into this list and explore.
