Are you the best pie maker in the Midwest? This competition is for you
There are plenty of good reasons to get out and attend the 4th Annual Beet Street Harvest Festival, the Bay View street party taking place on Saturday, Oct. 12, from noon to 6 p.m. on Potter and Wentworth Avenues.
After all, there will be live music, great eats from mobile food vendors including Algo Dulce, Maya Ophelia's, Cake Bandits and Twisted Plants, brunch from Goodkind and seasonal cocktails, mocktails and Bloody Marys from Cactus Club and Palomino. There will also be music, film and the Punk Rock Rummage featuring a variety of fun vendors.
But if you're not only an eater, but also a maker, of pies, you may want to stay tuned for even bigger news.
Pie makers wanted
Beet Street will also be the site for the Fourth Annual Great Midwestern Pie Championship, a contest hosted by Honeypie Cafe that seeks to zero in on the best pie makers in the area.
The contest is open to both amateur and professional pie makers of all ages who can enter their baked goods in four categories: Wisconsin ingredients, classic apple, chocolate crazy and cherry.
The catch? All entrants must register for the contest online before Wednesday, Oct. 9.
A few things to note:
- All ages and levels of expertise are invited to participate.
All pies must be 9-10" and made from scratch. No pre-made crusts or canned fillings allowed.
Pies will be judged by a blind panel of judges on the basis of their overall appearance and creativity, crust (color, texture and flavor), filling (consistency and flavor) and overall taste.
All details, including competition rules, are available online.
Judging of pies will begin at noon on Saturday, Oct. 12 with winners announced and prizes awarded once judging is complete (about 2:30 p.m.). Division prizes include:
- Best in Show/Grand Prize: Best In Show Ribbon, $100 Cash prize
- First Prize (one in each category): 1st Place Ribbon, $50 gift certificate to Honeypie
- Second Prize (one in each category): 2nd Place Ribbon, $25 gift certificate to Palomino
- Third Prize (one in each category): 3rd Place Ribbon, $15 gift certificate to SmallPie
