The Prince sandwich at Ashley's, your favorite local barbecue, by far.

Milwaukee's best barbecue, 2014

For the eighth straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com, presented by Locavore, the newest restaurant at Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2014."

Watch out, barbecue fans, because there's a new powerhouse in town. The runaway winner in our reader's poll in the best barbecue category is a restaurant that wasn't even in the top five last year. But this year, it notched nearly twice as many votes as the defending champ.

Ashley's Bar-B-Que, 1501 W. Center St., and its sister place, Ashley's Que, 124 W. National Ave., combined to wallop the down-home competition and waltz away with the title, Milwaukee's best barbecue.

Our own Lori Fredrich has raved about both places, saying:

"From slow-cooked Southern greens flavored with smoked turkey (my personal favorite), to homemade macaroni and cheese and baked beans and corned beef that's been cooked for seven to eight hours until it's falling-apart tender, Ashley's Que offers some of the best in Southern comfort food fare.

"And then there's the barbecue. Whether you order ribs, pork shoulder or tips, there's little like the meat you'll find at Ashley's."

The editorial staff at OnMilwaukee.com has no argument with that assessment.
