Brewers manager Ned Yost, a computer geek who spends some of his rare free time talking with his friends at Milwaukee PC about integrated circuits, chip technology and the latest sound cards and drivers, did not purchase a new iPhone 3G on Friday, the first day the devices were available.

He does, however, plan to try to pick one up Saturday.

"I think I'm going to have Alex wait in line for me and then cut in," Yost said, referring to clubhouse attendant Alex Sanchez.

Yost, who has built his own desktop PCs in the past and now uses a Mac laptop, used the first-generation iPhone and loved it.

During batting practice Friday, he grabbed FSN Wisconsin reporter Trenni Kusnierek's new iPhone and showed reporters some of its features, particularly the GPS.

"This little button gives you your current location," Yost said, dialing up a hybrid map that showed a satellite view with a street map overlay.

"I love my iPhone," Yost said. "This new one is awesome. You can do everything with it."

Many current and former major-league players are enamored of the iPhone. FSN Wisconsin analyst Jeff Cirillo loves his and word from the Cincinnati clubhouse was that Reds slugger Ken Griffey, Jr., visited an AT&T store near Southridge Friday but the phones were sold out.
