Just returned from Isla Mujeres about a month ago. Funny how you described it as the Key West of Mexico and my friends and I called it the Door County of Mexico. I want to go back. Tomorrow. It was one of the prettiest, most relaxing, most fun with the local people, most interesting self-touring islands I have ever visited. (Did you see the seashell house?) Being somewhat partial to Mexican vacation spots...this is absolutely my new favorite. We stayed at Ixchel Hotel at Playa Norte. Location, location, location. The beach bars were great, and the beach is sadly eroding but nonetheless we sat on beach chairs and watched the waves, the boaters, the sunsets and the friendly vendors...no one was pushy or aggressive...and met some of the most wonderful people ever. Tourists and locals alike. Just plain nice people. Viewed a wedding on the beach and almost felt like one of the guests. Please don't tell anyone else about Isla so that it doesn't get spoiled by tourists.
