Damn Yankees

Tickets! Tickets! Get your Tickets here!
Last night was opening night of Damn Yankees at the Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove.  The musical by Douglass Wallop and George Abbott;
Music, with lyrics by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler runs July 11-13, 17-20, 24-27, 31- August 3, 2008. Tickets are $20.00.

This musical is funny, delightful - with excellent acting. The set and costumes are outstanding.

All of the characters are perfectly matched with the performers, but a special mention should be made for William Jackson who plays Mr. Applegate. His presence on stage is prominent and commanding.

Young Joe Hardy, played by David Finley, will warm your heart with his "boyish charm".

The children's ensemble has children 12 and under in the performance. If you have young children, it is always nice to take them to shows with their peers. Mine is 11 - he thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Other than a slightly suggestive dance by Lola "Whatever Lola Wants". Lola is played by Samantha Deibler, whom is a recent graduate from Milwaukee High School of the Arts dance department. The dance was "suggestive" as a High School Student can get. (I am making mention of this for any stiffly conventional potential patrons.)

This musical is fast-paced, humorous and entertaining for an audience of all ages. You do not need to be a sports fan (I'm not) to enjoy!

***Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race. As Joe helps create a winning team, he realizes the true worth of the life he's left behind. The catchy score is filled with rousing production numbers and popular favorites like "Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants.”
(Music Theatre International)

Show times:
Thursdays at 7:30 pm
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm
Sunday, July 13 at 2:00 pm
Sundays, July 20 & 27 at 2:00 and 7:00 pm
Sunday, August 3 at 2:00 pm

Hurry and get your Tickets before they are all sold out!

Photo and ***from sunsetplayhouse.com

Fishing at the Lakefront

Friday afternoon I took my son fishing down at the lagoon by Summerfest. The dog came with us and was so excited to go fishing, he ran ahead and climbed down these huge rocks. He doesn't like to jump in the water - not knowing where the bottom is, and I was packed down like a mule. I didn't want to have to drop everything again and go get him - as he can't pull himself up the cliff like rocks. After many - Seamus jump in the water, he finally did. I walked ahead to get to the beach. I knew if he saw me there he would turn and get away from all the rocks. My son stayed on land encouraging him as he went. There were a few moments I thought I would have to jump in and save him, but he finally made it across the whole lagoon.

OK fine, we all got to the beach, the dog can swim, the kid can fish and we can all be happy - right? I forgot the bait in the car - so my son ran back for me and got it. We baited up the fishing lines and started casting. The dog started chasing after the bobbers - thinking it was a game of fetch. Now for a dog who won't give you a ball back when you want to play, I was amazed that he even thought he would even think of chasing a bobber.

Fish were flopping all around - but no bites on our line. We enjoyed listening to the African Fest musicians practicing, and about 5:00 it was time to head home. I promised we would go in the morning and try again.

Saturday morning came and I really didn't feel like going. We finally got going around 11:00. All our bait was dead. Since my son went fishing with the Urban Ecology Center and caught fish with macoronni and cheese, we decided to give that a try. We headed down to Vetran's Park - set up camp - no fish biting. The guy next to us was catching fish, but not us. We decided to change to fishing lures. I'm casting and casting and realize that the lure is probably to big for the fish that are in this pond. We pack up and head to the boat launch breakwater on Lake Michigan. We forget the chairs, just have a backpack, our tackle box and the two poles. We start fishing off the breakwater. I'm hot, tired, bored and really annoyed. I was using my husbands fishing pole and he is left handed, so to mix things up a bit, I thought I would try casting left handed. His pole, is the kind that you hold on to the line with your finger, then let go while casting. Right handed, I tried really hard to get my line farther and farther. Left handed, I pulled back and really let it rip ! Since I was doing this left handed and I'm right, I not only let go of the cast line, but the whole darn fishing pole too! Yup, it all went flinging in the air and landed straight into Lake Michigan!

I looked down and watched it sink to the bottom. I wasn't sure how deep it was, so I didn't want to jump in - I also had my swim goggles and the swim beach was just to far with the waves and all. I knew I could make it , but I know the currents are really strong- I just didn't want to risk it. I asked two fishing boats that came in to help, the Milwaukee County Parks employee working the gas area - no such luck. I even stopped a guy that had a Blood Hound rescue dog - trying to see if he could help. My son kept telling me it was really expensive. The whole time, I'm thinking a couple of hundred dollars. Frustrated - my options were gone - that was it, we were going home.

On the way back to the car, I felt a little better as my son said the pole was $50.00's. He gave me three options. 1.) we don't tell Daddy and when he goes fishing we just don't know where the pole is. 2.) we buy a new one and don't tell him or 3.) I completely blame him. I said we are just going to tell the truth.

We arrive home, my husband, mom and dad are sitting on the back patio having a lunch break and I go in the house - I had to get my contact out of my eye. My son follows. The three of them are sitting there dumbfounded. I came out, my husband asks me if my son threw a pole in the lake. I said he told you? (See child advise #3) Then the three of them all asked what happened. I relayed the story and my husband starts laughing that it was a $15.00 pole and he only got it because it was the only one available at the time he went to the store (good reason not to follow child advise #2) His whole bill came to $50.00's, including the license. (Whew) and a good lesson not to risk your life just for a fishing pole - remember no one can try to pull one over on a dad AND always tell the truth!

I think I'm done fishing for a bit!

Have you heard about the town in Florida built by the founder of Domino's. The town is completely Christian and run based on Catholic values. They are asking stores not to sell contraceptives.

As a Catholic myself, I think this concept is almost like a cult and wonder how the children growing up will deal with the "real world" when they venture out.

What do you think about this town concept?

I entered all my automated codes and birthday and waited like a Anaconda waits for its prey - just to say "I've already entered that information automatically - you should have it.

Well, it never happened. After being on hold for 10 mins, listening to some god-awful music and being told I was being transferred to an agent and I would hear some clicking and more music - my heart sank as I heard - extension 7542 does not answer. WHAT!!!!!!!!!! So I hang up, redial and get the SAME THING but I get a Kevin so and so. So NOW I'm really mad.

There is one thing I can't stand in this world and that is voice mail. Hate leaving it, hate retrieving it. The other thing I can't stand is Health Insurance Companies. You see, we are self-employed and have to deal with all aspects of if. I could go on and on and on about it, but I won't stress you.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for an agent for Health Insurance and when is our good governor going to do something about it?

The black dog in my avatar photo is Meg. She is "the girl next door". The red Golden is my Seamus (Sha-mus). The are good friends. Meg just came for a visit and I usually leave her mom notes from Meg about her stay. This time, I sent some emails. A friend of mine, described Meg as a "cheer leader" and Seamus is like a wise old man.

I thought I would share Megs notes to her mom with you. My son is Robert. Meg always sleeps in his room!

Hey, where are you? Are you having fun? I sure am! Look at me!! We went swimming today. Thought it would be a good way to get the grass wet too! I think it is suppose to rain soon, so we put some grass seed down. You are suppose to water it twice a day, for three weeks - did you read the bag? I did. THAT's what it says. I'll try not to pee out there. I was SO busy today. I played ball from like 3:30 until 6:00. Katherine was busy baking inside and she didn't realize how excited I was when we came in for dinner, so I had to stay inside and relax for like two hours. Then I had a frosty paw! Did I have one of those before? They are like so good!! Can we get some? I ate mine faster than Seamus. I like having my own bowl in the kitchen - oh yea, and I get a bit of rug to stand on too! Hey, so did you get me a present yet? I really want to rip one of those Chicago Cubs tennis balls apart! Well, I gotta get back to sleep with that cute little Robert. He might wake up and see me gone and wonder where I am. Hey, can we talk bikini when you get back? (sent 3 photos of Meg and Seamus swimming in their pool)Love, Meg

DAY TWO

Ma, Did you get to where you were going OK? I bet your busy. I'm busy too! Got to go in a car ride this afternoon and this morning. Sorry, we forgot to take a picture. We'll try to get an extra one tomorrow! Played baseball too! - Yup, I was the catcher, the outfield AND the base runner. I caught on eventually and then I only caught my own balls. Seamus tried to get a few too! That guy can be quick when he wants to. Sorry, but I ran on the grass a little bit. That's OK, I spread it around a little bit... right? Well, after hanging outside, I begged to come in and now I'm fast asleep. This busy stuff is tiring. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzLove Meg

3:00 a.m. PEE Ma,Why don't you let me go outside at 3:00 a.m. and give me treats to get me to go out?? OOOOOHHHHH, that's right, we don't have a cat that goes outside and we have to look for in the middle of the night 'cause it is going to rain all of 16 mins and you don't put me in the bedroom so the cat would come in and then give me treats to get me back out to go potty because you think it might rain longer than 15 mins. HEY, while we were out. A HUGE Surburban came by and dropped off stuff at a few peoples doors... (newspaper) I was so good and didn't bark - I had a little help.. :) Hey, hope you are having fun!Love Meg

DAY THREE - I THINK - THEY ALL RUN TOGETHER

Ma,Got to drop Robert off at camp today, went for our crawl (you know, someone is sooooo slow). Then I moved from the living room wag bag to Roberts and back and forth etc.... you get the picture.I didn't go to pick up Robert because well, don't know. Maybe I just needed my space by myself. Katherine even tried to get me going with a dog treat. I was a no go. So I missed the ride to Culvers and well, I didn't get my photo today. It was suppose to be of me hanging my head out the back window. Well, close your eyes and think of it! Well Ma, I hope you are having a good time! Oh yea, the Murrays were all excited because they spent their gift card at Sendiks. Robert got Swedish Fish, (2) lunchables and Marty got some Cashews, Candied Raisins and more Cashews (he shared some with Katherine because she got two Avocados). So they were happy to have things they hardly ever buy and I overheard Robert had to walk us today and tomorrow because he got most of the gift card. He told me it was worth it because his mom won't let him get lucnhables very often. Kinda like you and treats! Love always,MegP.S. Katherine says thanks for the gift card! :)

DAY FOUR

Ma,Hope you and Tony are having a blast! I know Katherine wishes she was with you! Go Redsox! Hey, I heard you will be back tomorrow. I'm so excited to see you! I'm soooo tired! These guys just wear me out! I didn't pick Robert up from Camp today, I just couldn't get off the wag bag! We got up at 2:00 a.m. again! I went potty and played some ball. Just after I went in Seamus charged a Coyote! Can you believe, on our block? HA! Well, I'm all ready for you to come home so we can go to bed at 10 and sleep all the way to 5:30, then I can sleep on your bed all day long until you come home or Seamus's family comes and let me out for a playdate!! Well, I've had a very good stay here, but I'm ready for a vacation from this vacation! Love always, Meg Meg's mom will be back today. :)

Drop and give me 15

Yesterday was a challenging day for my 10 year old and me. Not the whole day, but everytime I asked him to do something - to help out around the house or clean up a mess of his.

As I closed my eyes and started to yell, I thought of my friend Monica who had just written me a letter. She has her kids do this! My mouth, I'm sure, twisted around like someone yelling N-O! in slow motion, but instead came out -

"Give me 15 push-ups for your smart mouth."

"WHAT?"

"Yup, you heard me - 15 right now!"

Well about 1/2 way through he had another 5 added on for laughing about how stupid this was. He got another 5 last night for refusing to wipe down the table outside for dinner AND lost his computer (his dad) and another 5 this morning.

WOW, not only am I going to help him out in gym class (he told me he was the worse kid at push-ups) I can punish and not yell and no one can report me for child abuse!! WOO HOO

Sorry folks, I'm not that mean - but I'll tell you, the "I don't have to do that" attitude may be allowed elsewhere, but not here!

One Man's Junk is another Man's Treasure

I know we have all heard that saying and to be honest with you, I am one of those that scans the stuff put out on the curb to see if there is anything good.

If you are a sentimental type of person, you may just really enjoy looking at the Betthauser's Auction website - http://betthausers.com/. Each week, there is a new auction and pictures to scan through. The real experience is actually going to the auction. You buy your bidding number for $1.00's. For some reason, they need to have your I.D. (shrugs shoulders). Don't know why.

The auctioneer opens up the bidding for each item. It is hard to really understand at first, but after awhile, you get the hang of it. It is fun to bid - way better than ebay and a lot faster!

May you give an auction a try - there are plenty here in Milwaukee or at least enjoy paging through their website. I sure do!

I have just returned from seeing the play "Footloose". The performance is being held at the Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove from July 13 - August 5, 2007. Tonights performance was a sold out show - for the second night - that's excellent and so is the show, I might add!

Tickets for musicals are $20.00's. You can order them on-line, but if you would like to save the processing fee, will call your tickets and order by phone. A $3.50 per ticket processing fee applies for tickets ordered online. Tickets are available online until two days before the performance.

You can call the box office at 262.782.4430 for tickets. I would definately try to make this show!

Oscar and Felix is the Sunset's first play next season! Check out next season's plays on their website. They all look promising!

Christmas In July

My very most favorite store in the whole wide world is Winkies Variety Store in Whitefish Bay. We do a lot of shopping in the basement part. Once in awhile, like last week, I went upstairs.

I thought I might get a deal on a few 4th of July pieces and I needed some notecards, I went upstairs to shop first and I nearly passed out from shock. My most hated holiday had already started. Here it was just after the 4th of July - the clearance hadn't even been removed, and we had CHRISTMAS???

Yes folks, Christmas in July. The ornaments are out already for sale and I was scrambling through my cupboards for some old Prozac pills. I mean really, Christmas in JULY? Last year, Winkies put their Christmas window decorations up 4 days before Halloween even ended. This holiday seems to get earlier and earlier. How much is too much? How early is too early? How soon does Christmas have to start?

Bike Trail

I know this is nothing new to most folks out there - but we just started taking the bike path. Since my son is 10, we have only made it down to the Urban Ecology Center and back. It is a great little ride, with no stops and pleasant people. If you are not familiar with the Urban Ecology Center, check it out at urbanecologycenter.org.

Our first day on the trail, we stopped at the Urban Ecology Center and played Othello and Don't Break the Ice. You should check it out if you haven't already!
