Words you never expect to hear.... "Mom, I want to play the bassoon just like you!"  Oh my, not "Dad, I want to be an engineer and design stuff just like you."

I am proud but cringing on the inside.  I don't have any bassoony friends that have made it big.  I have bassoony friends that earn a Masters degree yet cannot climb out of the community orchestra mode, forcing them to get a real job as anything but a professional full time.

Ah well, so we set her up with a bassoon and she is going to work learning the notes, with Mom drilling her on the "magic" of muisc..."Hey! there is MATH involved here!" and "why is b flat the same as a sharp?"

It is fun, showing her that bass clef is different that top line piano treble clef.

It is fun, showing her my obsession with the music of Fantasia and how cool the bassoon parts are in these movies.

Now let's see if she has the gumption to succeed....time will tell.  A strange instrument in a land where flutes and trumpets dwell....yes my dear, you will be different...it's you job to be different GOOD!!!

Now this fall she can hear me do Beethoven's 6th in Wauwatosa with the Concord Chamber Orchestra .  Yes, flying Pegasus and Centaurs via  Fantasia!
