The Young Casanovas are trying to break into the business. Milwaukee-based musical collaborators Al Daniels and Jason Haase have developed a vision of something creative, redefining and intriguing. Their latest work, "Thirty in Fifteen," mixes 30 R&B hooks or choruses in 15 minutes.
The duo recorded and produced "Thirty in Fifteen" in hopes of gaining access to the international music industry. While confident in their ambition to grow as a production company, the Young Casanovas hope to create a path for other new artists as well.
This week, OnMilwaukee.com sat down with Daniels to discuss the Young Casanovas' innovative revelation.
OnMilwaukee.com: Describe "Thirty in Fifteen."
Al Daniels: It is 30 hooks in 15 minutes. There are a variety of different sounds and musical styles, but R&B and hip-hop are really the basis. If this volume goes as hoped, we want to do additional volumes within other genres like pop and instrumental.
OMC: What would you describe as signature about your style and the album?
AD: I think it's really very different because of the different individuals working on project -- our collaboration gives it a different feel. I grew up in Alabama with soulful Southern gospel but then moved to Milwaukee when I was 17 and felt the influence of urban hip-hop. Jason was raised here but has lived in Florida and so I think it's a real combination of the sounds as we were growing up.
OMC: Where did the idea for "Thirty in Fifteen" come from?
AD: We thought, how can we be creative? People have taken different routes to get attention from record labels and producers but we didn't want to take too much time. We wanted to sell a song through the hook. People tend to memorize the hooks of the songs and we thought that if they liked it they will pretty much like the verses and rest of the song. We feel that it is almost the first time that anyone has really thought to do this.
OMC: Where was the album recorded?
AD: We recorded in Milwaukee and in Florida. We have our own recording producers and in-house team base. We work a lot with Trio Records but we really like to create everything hands on.
OMC: What is your personal musical background?
AD: My background is R&B and hip-hop, but I was raised with Southern gospel in Louisiana.
OMC: You collaborate with Jason Haase on this work, have you collaborated on works in the past?
AD: We have multiple projects together but we haven't released anything yet because we want to have a collection of works, kind of like a vault, to pull work from when the interest is right. On "Thirty in Fifteen," some of the hooks are Jason's and some are mine and then we collaborate on a few as well as bring in some outside artists.
OMC: What are your plans for the album?
AD: At the end of the month we are going to some A&R and production seminars in New York. We hope to get feedback and constructive criticism. We are really just looking to grow as a company and to find opportunity as artists, songwriters and producers. We want to give opportunity to others who find it hard to get inside the business as well. We are trying to expand as a company but help others out as well.
OMC: Do the Young Casanovas have any plans for the summer?
AD: We always have an annual Fourth of July boat party for adults. We like to showcase our work and help people understand our company and what we do. We also do youth shows in different parks and venues. We are really trying to get a wide audience and show people the style of music that we are creating.
