What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Feb. 2, 2007 at 11:46 a.m.

We at OnMilwaukee.com have stumbled on our new favorite time waster: Midomi.com. The concept is simple. Sing or hum a few bars of any song into your computer's microphone, and magically, the site tells you what the song is.

Ostensibly, this could come in handy if you have a song stuck in your head and must remember what it is. At our office, however, it provided an opportunity for a little impromptu "American Idol."

First, we tried to see if it could match on some Milwaukee-themed songs.

"When I'm a walkin', I strut my stuff, and I'm so strung out!" I warbled.

Five seconds later, it identified "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes.

Holy crap, this thing works, I shouted from my office.

Next, I brought in my business partner, Jeff, to hum some Bodeans. He made some noise that vaguely resembled "Runaway."

Wait for it … nothing.

Next, I forced him to sing The Gufs. I think tried to sing "Crash (Into Me)," but again Midomi was not impressed. I hopped back onto the mic and belted out the "Happy Days" theme song. Bingo! It found it.

Feeling like the king of karaoke, I tried "Roll Out The Barrel." No match. "Closer To Free." No match.

I called for backups -- it was time to take this thing national.

Two members of our sales team gave it a whirl. Caroline ripped off a lovely rendition of "American Pie," which the site immediately recognized. John struck out with his gansta rap stylings of "The Next Episode." Crooning "Desperado" didn't work, either.

But now the kid gloves were off. We scored matches with Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" and "Buddy Holly Song," and James Taylor's "Mexico." And we were shot down with Tenacious D's "The Road."

When the giggling subsided, we got back to work. But take my word for it, Midomi.com is the funniest thing on the Web right now. Enjoy it today.
