While some may consider them to be a cliche of modern cinema, the well-executed car chase scene is a form of art. What are the best ever?

In response to paulm: yes, absolutely true. I think Friedkin said something to the effect that he was a very callow youth and all he cared about was getting the shot. Judging from his commentary on The French Connection Blu-ray and the stories from the set of The Exorcist, he seemed like a very reckless director.

In response to the last post: The French Connection was indeed great guerilla filmmaking and set the standard for everything since, but the director William Friedkin and actor Gene Hackman have both stated that they would never shoot a sequence like that again because it was too foolish and dangerous.

I watched The French Connection on Monday. It's been years since I've seen it and I think I liked it even more now. I watched it with the Friedkin's commentary track on and I was amazed that they used wheelchairs to get tracking shots and that the car chase was in real time and in real traffic like another poster mentioned. Also, the traffic jam on the Brooklyn Bridge is real and they didn't have permits for anything. Guerilla filmmaking at its best. No one makes movies like this anymore.

The same guy that choreographed the car chase in Bullitt also set up the chases in French Connection and The Seven Ups. Great films.
