Event Description

Rasputin and the Empress (1932) 123 min. - With John, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, Ralph Morgan, Diana Wynyard, Edward Arnold, Jean Parker The only film the three Barrymores ever appeared in throughout their careers!

The story opens with the 300th reign of the Romanovs of Holy Russia. When the Czar Nicholas II is discovered to have hemophilia, the Empress (Ethel) turns to Holy Man Rasputin (Lionel). Rasputin wedges himself into the Empress’ confidence and eventually advises the Czar on policies of the Empire. His interference begins the destruction of the Empire. An Imperial Prince (John) plans and brings about the death of Rasputin. Rasputin’s death is one of the most harrowing scenes ever put on film. Ethel Barrymore’s talking film debut.
