Mike Brenner tells us that due to issues with the artist, he canceled the final show at Hotcakes Gallery and the space will close May 24 instead on in July as originally announced.
"More than anything it's just a general frustration with how much hassle it is to put on a quality show and the lack of interest from the general public," Brenner says.
A show featuring works by Meredith Dittmar & Betsy Walton opened Feb. 23 and runs until March 22. After that, the gallery hosts a trio of MARN Mentors shows, the last of which ends on the gallery's last day.

Not a minute too soon really. Check out Mike Brenner's gross youtube contributions just to be further disgusted. Realize there is a too cool for school element that will have to find a new host..I'm sure something will open up. As for now, I'm enjoying a little of the much-lauded Hotcake's-esque Schadenfreude. Shame on me, but I am.

OMC has given this has-been FAR too much press.

I hope the door doesn't hit him in the butt on the way out of town. He and the CEO from Red Prairie can sit around and complain about Milwaukee while faking break-ins and cursing the day the Fonz ruined their lives.

Don't even get me started on this subject again. How much publicity does he need for a closing? I am waiting for all the hoopla if (I strongly say IF) Miller moves?

It's sort of hard to stay neutral on the Brenner issue, when this blurb starts with stating the reason for the show cancellation is with the artist, but then comes back around and blames the people of Milwaukee. I'm an art lover and appreciate what Hotcakes and MARN have done for the community. However, I think this is the final straw for me questioning Mike Brenner's projections of rage against a city I hold dear. Unlike some of the psychos he highlights on his site, I wish Mike Brenner the best of luck in what he does next. I also hope he realizes Chicago has it's problems too and that Milwaukee isn't that bad. I also wonder if he will return renewed to Wisconsin in five or so years and open a new gallery. Of course, I doubt he'll ever issue an apology for so deeply offending Milwaukeeans -- even those who appreciate its art scene.
