Brewers deal for Lopez
Looking to replace Rickie Weeks, who is out for the foreseeable future after suffering a sprained ankle Wednesday, the Brewers Thursday purchased the contract of infielder Felipe Lopez from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Lopez had been playing for the Rays' Class AAA affiliate in Durham, N.C., where he was hitting .305 with seven home runs and 37 RBI since clearing waivers on May 5. In 32 games with the Rays, Lopez hit just .216 with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI.
General manager Doug Melvin has traded for Lopez before. In July 2009, Melvin sent minor leaguers Cole Gillespie and Roque Mercedes to Arizona for Lopez after Weeks suffered a broken wrist.
