Next American City, a national magazine covering the frontlines of urban innovation, comes to Milwaukee next week.

Associate Publisher Pooja Shah says, "Since we are a magazine that covers cities nationwide, we try and visit a different city a month and work in conjunction with local organizations to plan a series of events. In Milwaukee, we are working with Fuel Milwaukee to host a symposium on public transportation to be held at the WE Energies building on Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m."

The Fuel Milwaukee event will be streamed on americancity.org and included, of course, in the magazine's online and print versions.

Shelley Jurewicz, Vice President Regional Talent, says Next American City also will include the event -- called "There's No Getting Around It" -- in a new book that will feature lectures from several American cities.

"Next American City will highlight Milwaukee's regional transportation issues in its November publication -- and they need you to be Milwaukee's voice. What ideas do you have? How would you like to see the problem resolved? Can one of the experts inspire you to reach out to legislators?" said Jurewicz, noting that the event is still open for registration.

On Sept. 18, Diana Lind, editor, and Shah visit the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a guest presentation, meet with the editorial board of the daily newspaper, OnMilwaukee.com and Common Council President, Ald. Willie Hines.

"Our goal is to meet the movers and shakers of Milwaukee and really get a sense of what is happening in the city," said Shah.

"Over the weekend of Sept. 20-21, we are planning to host a 24:HRS event (americancity.org/24). The 24:HRS trip is essentially 24 continuous hours spent in the city with the idea being that we want to explore the city through the eyes of our local guides, meet the people who live in the city and listen to what they have to say about what makes Milwaukee so unique."

The 24:HRS summary will be posted here.

According to its Web site, "Next American City is published by The Next American City, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable economic growth in America's cities and examining how and why our built environment, economy, society and culture are changing."
