Dear Anjl & Marilynn,

I hate the smell of my girlfriend's hair. She uses an apple-scented shampoo that literally makes me nauseous! How do I kindly ask my girlfriend to switch shampoos? I don't want to insult her. I don't want to suffer, either ...

Dear Apple Soused,

Marilynn Mee: That's exactly what you have to do -- kindly ask her to change. And frankly, I don't blame you: the only place I want to smell apples is when they are baking in my oven.

Anjl Rodee: I have an idea, why don't you gift her with a nice shampoo that does smell good to you?

MM: Ooh, that's a bad idea.

AR: Pray tell.

MM: My feeling on hair products is the same as it is regarding blue jeans: I'm very particular, and I don't skimp.

AR: We're talking about someone that is using apple-scented shampoo here. I don't think Aveda has any apple-scented products ...

MM: Good point. Great point. The fact that it's apple-scented tells me she's buying her hair products at the corner drug store.

AR: Even Aussie would be a step up from apple-scented anything. I stand by my suggestion. She probably doesn't even think about the scent. But if you give her an alternative, she'll probably keep using it just because you like it.

MM: If I had a boyfriend (which I don't, so perhaps I'm speaking out of desperation), if he didn't like the smell of my body lotion, perfume, shampoo or whatever, I would want him to tell me so I can change it. If she's a nice girlfriend, it should matter to her that you don't like the smell. I would think she would want to switch, at least to a different fruit.

AR: Why don't you get her to the store under the pretense that you need to pick up some things, and then casually pick up some shampoos, smell them and then make comment about how much you'd love for her hair to smell like this?

MM: At which point, she's going to look at you and say, "What's wrong with the way my hair smells?" This is when you kindly tell her that you don't want to smell applesauce on her head. Don't be surprised if she tells you at this point about some odors of your own that she doesn't care for.

AR: She'll probably let you pick out her shampoo if you let her choose your body wash. On second thought, you may want to consider that possibility before you say anything. You may end up smelling like a big ole strawberry.
