New bars and brewpubs face a daunting task when they open their doors to the public: distinguishing themselves from every other brewpub. It's not like we have a shortage of them in Milwaukee and convincing people to check out a place they've never been to before isn't easy.
That said, you have to give credit to anyone willing to risk time, money and effort opening up a new establishment.
Onopa Brewing Co., 735 E. Center St., swung open its doors in Riverwest this month. Future plans include a full menu and brewing their own beer, but for now it's a bar that is unique, fresh and more than worth your time.
The inside of Onopa is large, open and wide, making it inviting from the moment you walk in. Once inside, the bar is against the wall on the right, but there are many other places to sit.
At the back of the place are extremely comfortable couches and chairs perfect for relaxing and good conversation. It hardly feels like a bar at all.
Another nice thing about Onopa is the modern art adorning the walls. That and ideal lighting (not too bright, not too dark) help give the bar a great atmosphere.
As is stands Onopa Brewing Co. is a refreshingly different kind of bar, a much-needed alternative for those looking to escape the monotony and crowds of Water St. and downtown clubs. It's the perfect place if you're looking for a little rest and relaxation to go with your beverage.
The Onopa Brewing Co. is open daily from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. For additional information call (414) 264-3630.
